CABJ on OTR

So yesterday yours truly (CABJ VP Print, Morgan Campbell) made a guest appearance on TSN's Off The Record.

Yes, I had a great time and yes I represented myself and CABJ well. But what made yesterday special for me was that another one of the panelists, XM Radio host Terry Mercury, was a fellow CABJ member.

Two CABJ members on the same panel on a sports talk show on mainstream Canadian television?

Doesn't happen often.

Anyway, you can view clips here.

And here.

And here.

Happy New Year?

More crappy news from the newspaper industry this weekend.

When I arrived at work yesterday a colleague asked if I had heard the rumours that the Globe and Mail was about announce layoffs.

Between buyouts and layoffs the Globe plans to jettison 10 percent of its work force.

This news follows job cuts at CTV and Sun Media, and a massive round of buyouts at the Toronto Star in 2008.

Ouch.

If you've been following media news then you know the outlook south of the border is even more grim. The Chicago Tribune is bankrupt. The New York Times isn't far behind. And now the Seattle Post-Intelligencer is up for sale and may have to close.

Tough times everywhere.

So my question is this:

What are the members of CABJ doing to recession-proof yourselves?

Do you have the skills to adapt if your job description changes?

Will your credentials and contacts allow you to land on your feet if your current gig is downsized, outsourced or otherwise eliminated?

Is there anything CABJ can do to help you survive and thrive as our industry continues to evolve?

We want to hear from you.

Please share your thoughts below....
